Toyo Enterprise, the creator of the popular "SUN SURF" brand known for its faithful reproduction of vintage aloha shirts, has amassed a valuable archive of over 4,000 rare vintage items over the years. This book, "VINTAGE ALOHA SHIRTS" produced by American culture magazine "Lightning," introduces exceptional pieces selected from this global collection.
Under the supervision of Yoshihiro Nakano, the director of SUN SURF and a researcher of aloha shirts, this book includes details about the history of the brand and information on each individual shirt. Detailed information about vintage aloha shirts is not widely known, even within the vintage industry. However, Nakano has regularly conducted local interviews in Hawaii, gathering information based on testimonies and materials from those who experienced the era. This complete preservation edition introduces about 2,000 shirts from the Sun Surf vintage aloha shirt collection, divided into 10 volumes, making it a must-see for aloha shirt enthusiasts and vintage fans.
The structure of "VINTAGE ALOHA SHIRTS" is essentially divided into chapters based on the design patterns of the shirts, with a themed feature included in each issue. The fourth installment features the popular design of aloha shirts known as the "Menu Pattern," with a focus on the "Matson Line." The Matson Navigation Company handled ship transportation from San Francisco to Hawaii, which included a luxury cruise business that traveled this route over six days. The "Menu Pattern" is derived from the cover design of the daily menu served on board the cruise ship. This feature not only showcases menu patterns created by Frank McIntosh and Eugene Savage but also presents various aloha shirts related to the route all at once.

Born in 1975 in Aichi Prefecture, Nakano became captivated by the charm of aloha shirts during his student days. After graduating from university, he moved to Hawaii, deepening his connections with the Japanese immigrants who shaped the history of aloha shirts while gathering information from that time. He met Tohru Kobayashi, the president of Toyo Enterprise Co., Ltd. and founder of the aloha shirt brand SUN SURF. After returning to Japan, he worked on selling aloha shirts under Kobayashi's guidance while repeatedly conducting business trips and local research in Hawaii, unraveling the previously unknown history of aloha shirts. Since 2013, he has been involved in manufacturing aloha shirts and has inherited the brand from Kobayashi. With a collection of over 4,000 vintage aloha shirts focusing on the finest works created between the 1930s and 1960s, he continues to promote the charm of aloha shirts to many people.
