The renowned brand 'SUN SURF' by Toyo Enterprise is celebrated for its faithful reproduction of vintage aloha shirts, leveraging over 4,000 precious vintage pieces collected over many years. Featured in the American culture magazine 'Lightning,' the book 'VINTAGE ALOHA SHIRTS' introduces rare masterpieces selected from this global collection.
This book, supervised by Yoshihiro Nakano, the director of SUN SURF and a researcher of aloha shirts, includes historical details about the brands and each shirt. Information about vintage aloha shirts is largely unknown within the vintage community; however, Nakano has conducted regular on-site research in Hawaii, gathering information based on testimonies and materials from those who experienced the era. Included are approximately 2,000 shirts from the SUN SURF vintage aloha shirt collection, meticulously compiled into a complete preservation version that every aloha shirt and vintage fan should not miss.
The structure of 'VINTAGE ALOHA SHIRTS' is primarily organized by the design patterns of the shirts, along with themed features included in each issue. The second volume highlights the works of textile designer 'JOHN “KEONI” MEIGS,' recognized in the history of aloha shirts, featuring more than 100 pages dedicated to his creations. No other aloha shirt-related books published thus far have introduced as many of Meigs' works. It covers renowned masterpieces known worldwide as well as lesser-known gems. Additionally, the focus of the second feature is the 'LAND OF ALOHA,' a classic design dubbed the most iconic among vintage aloha shirts. The cover showcases a miracle piece discovered in deadstock condition, never washed and retaining its original colors.

Yoshihiro Nakano, Aloha Shirt Researcher
Born in 1975 in Aichi Prefecture. Captivated by aloha shirts during his student years, he moved to Hawaii after graduating university. He deepened his connections with Nisei immigrants who shaped the history of aloha shirts and collected information from that time, leading to his encounter with Toru Kobayashi, the representative of Toyo Enterprise and the founder of the SUN SURF brand. Upon returning to Japan, he engaged in selling aloha shirts under Kobayashi's guidance while frequently traveling to Hawaii for research, uncovering the previously unknown history of aloha shirts. Since 2013, he has also been involved in producing aloha shirts, inheriting the brand from Kobayashi. Nakano continues to inspire people to enjoy the charm of aloha shirts through an extensive collection of over 4,000 pieces, selectively curated from the most outstanding vintage aloha shirts created from the 1930s to the 1960s.
