SUN SURF, known for its faithful reproduction of vintage aloha shirts, is a brand by Toyo Enterprise, which has archived over 4,000 valuable vintage pieces collected over many years. This rare gem is presented in the book 'VINTAGE ALOHA SHIRTS,' published by American culture magazine Lightning.
Under the supervision of Yoshihiro Nakano, director of SUN SURF and aloha shirt researcher, the book features the history of the brand and detailed information about each shirt. Much of the information about vintage aloha shirts is not widely known even in the vintage industry. However, Nakano has conducted regular on-site research in Hawaii and collected information based on testimonies and materials from those who experienced that era. This complete preservation edition introduces about 2,000 pieces from the SUN SURF vintage aloha shirt collection, divided into 10 volumes, making it a must-see for aloha shirt enthusiasts and vintage fans.
The structure of 'VINTAGE ALOHA SHIRTS' is fundamentally organized by shirt design patterns, along with thematic features included in each issue. The first volume focuses on the iconic Hawaiian brand 'KAMEHAMEHA' and the representative mainland brand 'DUKE KAHANAMOKU,' showcasing valuable designs alongside each brand's history.
Author and Supervisor
Aloha Shirt Researcher Yoshihiro Nakano
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1975, Nakano became captivated by aloha shirts during his student years and moved to Hawaii after graduating from university. He deepened his connections with the Japanese immigrants who founded the history of aloha shirts and met Kōichi Kobayashi, founder of the aloha shirt brand SUN SURF and representative of Toyo Enterprise. After returning to Japan, he engaged in selling aloha shirts while repeatedly traveling to Hawaii for research, unraveling the previously unknown history of aloha shirts. Since 2013, he has also been involved in producing aloha shirts, inheriting the brand from Kobayashi. Based on a collection of over 4,000 meticulously curated vintage aloha shirts made from the 1930s to the 1960s, he continues to share the allure of aloha shirts with many people.
