The Palaka originated as workwear on large Hawaiian farms, designed to protect against the sharp leaves of pineapples and sugarcane. Initially, it was primarily produced in long sleeves. As it became popular among Japanese immigrants as everyday wear, short-sleeve versions were created to suit the Hawaiian climate. The production of long-sleeve workwear significantly outnumbered the early short-sleeve varieties, making these short-sleeve Palaka shirts quite rare. Similarly, the color variants that began emerging during this time were produced by only a limited number of brands, resulting in very few remaining today. The 'WATUMULL'S' brand has recreated one of these rare color Palaka shirts, originally produced for the gift shop 'LEILANI' in the 1950s, based on authentic items.
