This artwork, depicting the role of Edobei performed by the third generation Ōtani Oniji in the play "Koi Nyōbō Zomewake Tazuna", is created by the enigmatic ukiyo-e artist, Tōshūsai Sharaku. In just 10 months, Sharaku produced nearly 140 pieces before vanishing. He is renowned for his large-format portraits (Ōkubie) that boldly depict Kabuki actors, skillfully exaggerating facial features such as hawk noses and underbites, alongside striking expressions and dynamic poses.

At Sun Surf, we pursue the unique perspective of woodblock prints, expressing the texture of the paper within the fabric of the shirt. We highlight the deformed "hands" and "eyes" as depicted by Sharaku in the original artwork, combining individual motifs into an all-over pattern layout.

Focusing on the Edo period artists who expanded Japan's cultural arts, we recreate the masterpieces of these masters on the canvas of Aloha shirts, reviving the passion embedded in designs that Japan takes pride in worldwide.
