This memorial shirt, a reproduction from the 1950s, honors the 100th Infantry Battalion, composed entirely of Japanese Americans, known as One Puka Puka (meaning 'zero' in Hawaiian). Recognized as the most decorated unit in U.S. military history, this battalion fought in Europe and dispelled prejudice against Japanese Americans during the war. The name "Purple Heart" was derived from the number of soldiers who received the Purple Heart medal for honorably wounded, reflecting their bravery.

Designed by Mark Yamanaka's brand, OKOLEHAO, based in Hilo, Hawaii, this shirt is a tribute to both Aloha shirts and the workwear called Palaka that was loved by sugar plantation workers.

This unique Aloha shirt represents the paradise of Hawaii, deeply connected to Japanese immigrants. With both tropical and traditional patterns, the demand for Aloha shirts surged in the mid-20th century as Hawaii became an established tourist destination. The evolution of design gave rise to many creations, and in the hunt for vintage Aloha shirts, you may occasionally find a rare gem. The SUN SURF special edition pays homage to the textile designers who created these works by perfectly reproducing their intricate details, rich prints, and powerful designs.
