The Aloha shirt reached its peak in the 1950s, a time when iconic designers emerged, including John Keoni Meigs. After moving to Hawaii in 1938 and writing for a local newspaper, he began designing. As mainland American brands entered the market in the ’50s with innovative ideas, Meigs traveled to islands like Tahiti, studying South Pacific cultures to create original designs. This piece, depicting a hula dancer dancing under the moonlight with the Surf Riders Hotel in the background, showcases Meigs' high level of craftsmanship. This original was produced by Hawaiian Tog's brand, Poi Pounder Tog, which enjoyed immense popularity locally and supplied famous department stores like Liberty House and Sears.
