The MATSON LINE was founded by Captain William Matson, who first sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii in 1882. Initially, it served as a cargo ship transporting supplies from the mainland United States to Hawaiian sugarcane plantations. As Hawaii began to gain prominence as a tropical paradise in the 1920s, the Matson Navigation Company launched three luxurious passenger ships. Travelers stayed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, built for them, enjoying elegant times in paradise. The Aloha shirt, which emerged around the same time, became synonymous with Hawaii.
