The brand Charlie Chan was established in 1938, just as the Aloha shirt was born. Located on Nuuanu Street in downtown Honolulu, the brand not only sold shirts but also women's dresses. Following diligent local research, fabric swatches of the designs they once carried were discovered, leading to this first-ever revival.

During the brand's inception, Hawaii's economy was transitioning from agriculture, focused on sugar cane and pineapple cultivation, to tourism. Workwear manufactured in sewing factories began to include sportswear like Aloha shirts. This shift increased the demand for crepe fabrics imported from Japan, with Japanese distributors playing a vital role. Historical invoices reveal that the design in this piece was printed for the brand by Fujii Junichi Shoten in Kyoto. The Oriental Design features intricate depictions, but this particular design, which comically portrays a castle and a dragon with bright colors, stands out uniquely among traditional Japanese patterns.
