Founded in 1936 as a military auxiliary agency for producing U.S. Navy uniforms, Kamehameha Garment Co. later grew to become one of Hawaii's largest clothing manufacturers. The Kamehameha brand has left behind many masterpieces, including designs featuring anthuriums, utilizing multicolored discharge techniques.

One such masterpiece is the “Gauguin Woodcut,” highly regarded as a work of art in the vintage market. Created by textile designer John Meigs, who collaged Paul Gauguin's print works, there are actually two variations of the main motif featuring women, likely due to differences in fabric cutting methods. Various theories exist, including one suggesting that John Meigs was requested to change the main motif by Kamehameha. However, all theories remain speculative, making this piece a continuing mystery. In response to numerous requests, Sun Surf will reissue the “MYSTIC” version (with the standing woman as the main motif) that was first crafted in 2014.
