Established in 1936 as a military auxiliary agency manufacturing uniforms for the U.S. Navy, Kamehameha Garment Co. grew to become one of Hawaii's largest apparel manufacturers. Kamehameha, the brand, is known for its artistic pieces, which include the renowned Anthurium design created with multi-color discharge printing.

One such masterpiece is the “Gauguin Woodcut,” which is highly regarded in the vintage market as an artwork. This famous design was created by textile designer John Meigs, who collaged the works of painter Paul Gauguin. Interestingly, there are two different designs of the main female motif. Some theories suggest the difference arose from changes in fabric cutting, while others imply that John Meigs altered the main motif at the request of Kamehameha. Various theories have been proposed, but all remain speculative, adding to the allure of this mysterious piece. In response to numerous requests, Sun Surf is re-releasing the “MYSTIC” version (where the main female motif is standing) that was originally produced in 2014.
