The "Daruma" is inspired by the image of Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, sitting in meditation. The symbolic red color signifies protection against evil spirits, popularized during the Edo period when red Daruma dolls were used as talismans against smallpox during outbreaks. This Japanese tradition was carried over to Japanese immigrants in Hawaii. The Daruma served as a source of emotional support for Japanese immigrants forced to live in unfamiliar lands, representing their cultural heritage and customs. One such custom was wearing good luck charms, and while Aloha shirts often feature auspicious motifs, shirts depicting the Daruma are exceptionally rare and highly valuable as vintage items.

As a fabric converter for Japanese textiles, "S.HATA SHOTEN" imported Japanese-made rayon Kabe crepe, silk habutae, and Polynesian prints, wholesale to local Hawaiian brands in cooperation with the major Japanese fabric trading company, Ichida. This piece reflects the sentiments of Japanese immigrants longing for their homeland, Japan.
