This piece draws inspiration from Imari and Arita ware, known as representative Japanese pottery. It features a luxurious design depicting the ancient Imari Kinrande style from the Edo period. Historically regarded as Japan's first pottery, the origin of Imari and Arita ware is traced back to the discovery of high-quality clay in Arita in the early 1600s. At that time, the primary source of ceramic wares was China, but due to civil strife, exports greatly diminished, leading to an increased domestic demand for Imari and Arita ware, which expanded its market share and eventually found success in Europe starting with exports to the Netherlands.

Honolulu's downtown has been a special place for many Japanese-American tailors and aloha shirt manufacturers even before the war. These brands managed to preserve the growing aloha shirt movement throughout the war despite material shortages. “Hawaiian Casuals,” the creator of this work, has continued to produce many popular pieces in this area since the post-war period.
