The T-shirt is one of the garments that symbolize America and was originally developed as an undergarment to be worn beneath uniforms and military clothing. This simple piece of clothing embodies America's rational approach to manufacturing.
The fabric, knitted in a tube shape called "marudō," features a structure with holes for the neck and arms, and sleeves, embodying a no-waste design. While it may look like modern casual wear, its nature is quite different. It has no shoulder slope, a neckline resembling a boat neck, and a neck rib that is double-stitched to prevent stretching, all designed to faithfully replicate the designs of the time.
This fabric made from circular knitting is slowly knitted over time using existing吊り編み machines.
The吊り編み machine was brought to Japan during the Taisho era, and now it operates solely in Wakayama Prefecture worldwide. It is an extremely inefficient machine that can only knit one meter per hour, but this allows the fabric to have a moderate unevenness and rich texture, almost as if it contains air. By using USA cotton as a material, the fabric has a dry texture and unique feel. YAKUSUGI, SAKURA, MUD DYED BROWN, USUZUMI are all carefully dyed one by one by hand, creating a charm in their unique expressions, with no two pieces being the same.
