One of the symbols of America, the T-shirt. As I investigated how this garment, developed as an undershirt worn under uniforms and military attire, was made, I realized it was born out of America's rational manufacturing approach. The fabric is knitted into a tubular shape called a round body, featuring a completely waste-free and simple design with holes for the neck and arms and sleeves attached. Although it looks similar to what is commonly worn today, it is entirely different in nature. The design extracts elements from the original specifications, such as the lack of shoulder slope, a neckline reminiscent of a boat neck, and a double neck rib for prevent stretching. The round body jersey is created on a loopwheel machine in Wakayama. By using USA cotton, it has a unique texture with a dry feel. The loopwheel machine, which arrived in Japan during the Taisho era, is currently operational only in Wakayama Prefecture. It can knit only one meter per hour, making it very inefficient, but by taking time slowly, it produces a unique texture with a moderate unevenness as if air is woven in together.
