One of the clothing items that symbolizes America is the T-shirt. As I researched how this garment, originally developed as an undergarment worn under uniforms and military uniforms, was made, I learned that it was a product of America's rational manufacturing approach. It features a completely waste-free, simple construction with a tubular fabric called a round body, where holes for the neck and arms and sleeves are attached. While it looks similar to what is commonly worn today, its nature is entirely different. The design incorporates elements from the original design, such as the absence of a shoulder slope, a boat neck-like neckline, and a double-layer neck rib for stretch prevention. The round body jersey is made on a hanging knitting machine located in Wakayama. By using USA cotton, the fabric gains a unique texture with a dry feel. The hanging knitting machine that arrived in Japan during the Taisho era is currently the only one operating in Wakayama Prefecture. Although it is very inefficient, capable of knitting only one meter per hour, taking time slowly results in a fabric with a unique feel, incorporating air and having a moderate unevenness.
