One of the iconic garments symbolizing America is the T-shirt. This garment, which has a history of being developed as an undergarment worn under uniforms and military uniforms, was found to be a product of America's rational approach to manufacturing as I investigated how it was made. It is made with a completely waste-free simple design that features a tube-shaped fabric called a round body, with holes for the neck and arms and sleeves attached. While it looks similar to what is commonly worn today, its nature is entirely different. It has no shoulder slope, a boat neck-like neckline, and a neck rib that is doubled to prevent stretching, which reflects the designs of that time. The round body fabric is created using a吊り編み機 (Turiami machine) located in Wakayama. By using USA cotton, it has developed a unique texture with a dry feel. The Turiami machine that entered Japan during the Taisho era is currently the only one operating in Wakayama Prefecture. Although it can only knit one meter per hour, making it very inefficient, the time taken allows for air to be knitted in, resulting in a fabric with a unique feel that has a moderate unevenness.
BURGUNDY is dyed using natural dyes based on "茜" (Akane). "Akane" is the oldest red dye used in Japan, with a dyeing history dating back to the Yayoi period. At T.T, the mixture was adjusted to achieve a deep color.
MUD DYED BROWN and SUMI DYED BLACK are carefully dyed one by one using traditional Japanese dyeing techniques, "mud dyeing" and "ink dyeing". No two pieces are the same, and you can enjoy their unique expressions.
HAND DRAWN SUMI takes inspiration from works of ink marbling by Kamizoe, a唐紙 (Karamik) craftsman in Kyoto, and expresses the subtle nuances of the brush strokes used by Yuzen craftsmen by hand-painting ink. Because it is hand-painted, the flow of the brush and the shades of color differ subtly from piece to piece, resulting in T-shirts with completely unique patterns.
