One of the symbolic garments of America, the T-shirt. As I researched how this garment, developed as an undershirt to be worn under uniforms and military clothing, was made, I found that it was the embodiment of America's rational approach to manufacturing. The fabric is knitted into a tube-shaped structure called a round body, with a completely waste-free and simple design that features holes for the neck and arms, as well as sleeves. While it looks similar to what is commonly worn today, it is entirely different in nature. The design extracts elements from the era, such as the lack of shoulder slope, a neckline reminiscent of a boat neck, and a double-layered neck rib to prevent stretching.
The round-bodied jersey is created using a hanging knitting machine located in Wakayama. By using USA cotton, the fabric acquires a unique texture with a dry feel. The hanging knitting machine, which arrived in Japan during the Taisho era, is currently operational only in Wakayama Prefecture, and it can knit just one meter per hour, making it very inefficient. However, by taking time to knit slowly, it produces a unique texture with a moderate irregularity, as if the air has been woven in together.
