There are various knits that were commonly worn by heavy laborers in America during the 1930s and 1940s. All of them are so hard and prickly that they are almost unwearable by modern standards. However, knits designed as tools for heavy labor possess a unique strength. They have a rustic quality reminiscent of traditional Japanese tools, with no overt expression of their essence, yet they convey a sense of enduring presence across generations. Could that intuition observed by Takahashi be realized in entirely different materials, such as silk? That was the beginning of this season's knit series. This vest is based on a hand-knit work vest from the 1920s.
