The peak of the Aloha shirt era was in the 1950s, during which a standout textile designer emerged, John Meigs. His works have garnered significant support from vintage collectors, many of whom have started collecting Aloha shirts captivated by Meigs' creations. Among his designs from the 1940s and 1950s are unpublished works that remained stored and unproduced at that time. It was Surfrider who was entrusted with bringing these designs to life as Aloha shirts, marking the beginning of "Keoni of Hawaii."

The "HOOLAULEA IN HAWAII" shirt, developed under the supervision of Meigs, was released in 1998 as one of the earliest pieces from the Keoni label. Its motif is based on the cover of a menu from the elegant liner "Matson Line," which sailed between San Francisco and Hawaii. Based on the menu design created by artist Eugene Savage, this work reconfigures those elements into a flat composition. Responding to numerous requests received each year, it brings back this legend with color combinations that were not produced back in '98 after 23 years.

In 1996, we discovered that the legendary textile designer, John Meigs, who has left his mark on Hawaii's fashion history, was still alive. He had unpublished works from the 1940s, and based on those original sketches, Surfrider produced the elusive collection under the name "Keoni of Hawaii." With Meigs resuming his Aloha shirt designs, he supported the brand until age-related burdens began to accumulate. After 2001, other artists who resonated with Meigs' vision began to design for the brand. The historical legacy of Aloha shirts as art, established by John Meigs, is honored as contemporary artists release Aloha shirts infused with their own artistic expressions.
