The flight suits of the 1910s to 1920s were often leather coats worn by pilots. After the Wright brothers took to the skies in 1903, there was a need for heavy leather coats that could withstand the cold. Leather coats and goggles, initially developed for motorcycles and automobiles (in open-top cars), also found their way into aviation. At that time, these garments were listed in comprehensive catalogs under the category of 'Clothing for Flyers,' with the heading 'Clothing for Aviators.' For those men attempting to fly faster and higher, warmth was vital, and coats that concealed the waist and allowed ease of movement proved to be very popular.
AVIATION ASSOCIATES
Between the 1920s and 1940s, various flight suits incorporating military specifications were commercially available. Analysis of old photographs from the war shows rare glimpses of pilots wearing these commercial jackets, testifying to their actual experience flying. Typically, wearing non-issued jackets was not permitted, yet wartime regulations were relaxed, allowing some flexibility. The main differences between government-issued items and commercial products lay in design and material usage, often adhering to government-approved colors. Many of these attractive jackets, based on military specifications, had been extensively arranged and modified, giving them a distinct and appealing classic appearance.
