The masterpiece "Gauguin Woodcut" by John Meigs is inspired by the woodblock prints created by painter Paul Gauguin, highly regarded for its artistic value by vintage aloha shirt collectors.

For Meigs, Gauguin was an admired figure, and he released the aloha shirt "Gauguin Woodcut First" in the 1940s, which reinterpreted Gauguin's woodblock print series "Noa Noa." While the first two designs went into production, the third remained unreleased, existing only as a colored design sketch. Nearly 50 years later, in 1996, Meigs approached Sun Surf with the idea of bringing this elusive third iteration to life, which initiated the "Keoni of Hawaii" project, adding a new page to the history of aloha shirts.

In 2020, as Toyo Enterprises celebrated its 55th anniversary, the "Gauguin Woodcut Third," a product of this initiative, was released with a new colorway. John Meigs’ passion is reborn.

KEONI OF HAWAII

In 1996, we discovered that the legendary textile designer "John Meigs", who made his mark in Hawaiian fashion history, was still alive. He had unpublished works from the 1940s, and based on these original drawings, Sun Surf began producing the elusive pieces under the name "Keoni of Hawaii." John Meigs also resumed designing aloha shirts to support the brand. However, as he aged, the burden became heavier each year, leading to other artists who resonated with his vision designing the collections after 2001. Respected for the history he built in artful aloha shirts, contemporary artists release aloha shirts infused with their artistry as "works."

This product comes packaged in a specially designed box for Keoni of Hawaii.
