The B-9, designed with a cotton twill outer shell and featuring a quilted lining filled with lightweight and highly insulating down, was adopted between 1943 and 1944. The front opens with both a zipper and buttons, preventing wind from penetrating the garment.

The BLACK MA-1 was first produced by Buzz Rickson's to celebrate their 10th anniversary. The renowned author William Gibson mentions the “Buzz Rickson’s Black MA-1” worn by the protagonist in his novel 'Pattern Recognition.' This resulted in the creation of the actual Buzz Rickson's Black MA-1. While the standard color for the MA-1 officially adopted by the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s was sage green, the BLACK MA-1 using black military-spec parts and materials is unique in the marketplace. Thus, it garnered popularity and attention from genuine enthusiasts. Even though specified to be dyed black, the variations in material dyeing result in subtle color differences when constructed into a single jacket, clearly showcasing the diverse materials used in the flight jacket.
