In the 1950s, the peak of Aloha shirt culture. Among the textile designers of the time, there was a particularly striking figure: John Meigs. His works have received strong support from vintage collectors, with many starting their own collections of Aloha shirts captivated by Meigs' creations. There exist unpublished works that were not commercialized at the time in the designs he created in the 1940s and 50s, which remained stored away. It was Sansurf that was entrusted by Meigs to release these as Aloha shirts, marking the beginning of "Keoni of Hawaii".
The "HOOLAULEA IN HAWAII" that appears this time is a work that was released in 1998, during the early days of the Keoni label, under Meigs' supervision. The motif is the cover of a menu used in the restaurant of the luxury liner "Matson Line," which navigated between San Francisco and Hawaii. This piece is a reconfigured flat composition based on the menu design created by the painter Eugene Savage. Responding to numerous requests made every year, the color scheme that was not productized at the time of '98 makes a legendary return after 23 years.

In 1996, we learned that the legendary textile designer who made his mark in Hawaii's fashion history, John Meigs, was still alive. He had unpublished works he created in the 1940s, and based on those original drawings, Sansurf productized the legendary works under the name "Keoni of Hawaii." John Meigs also resumed designing Aloha shirts to support the brand. However, due to his advanced age, the burden increased year by year, and after 2001, artists who resonated with his aspirations began to take on the design work. The history of Aloha shirts as art built by John Meigs is honored, and contemporary artists release Aloha shirts as "works" infused with their own artistic expression.
