The AL-1 is a winter flight jacket adopted by the BUAER (Bureau of Naval Aviation) from the late 1940s to the early 1950s, designed to be worn with the AW-1 hood. The outer fabric is made from high-density cotton corduroy, offering a supple feel and excellent wind resistance. The lining features an alpaca mohair wool pile for the body, with smooth rayon wool used for the sleeves, and wool flannel insulation sewn inside for added warmth.

The front is designed with both a zipper and buttons for enhanced cold protection. There are pockets on both sides of the inner lining, with the left side featuring a zipper pocket that can be accessed even when the front zipper is closed. An adjustable strap is incorporated at the waist to enhance fit. Additionally, the slashed pockets are equipped with ribs that block external air, showcasing a unique feature not commonly found in other jackets.

The AL-1 comes with both ribbed cuffs and zippered cuffs, with differences based on the contractor. The extensive use of materials in the construction of this jacket highlights the dedication and energy the BUAER invested in creating such an exceptional piece.
