CLANE: Japan's "Original Standard" Womenswear, Explained

Founded: February 2015, Tokyo, Japan
Director: Ena Matsumoto (松本 恵奈)
Concept: "ORIGINAL STANDARD" — special basics for the long term
Why it matters: Silhouette-first womenswear with Made-in-Japan denim

Ena Matsumoto left her role at MARK STYLER in January 2015 and, within weeks, founded CLANE DESIGN Co., Ltd. The premise was deceptively simple: take "standard" clothing — the kind of pieces everyone already owns — and rethink them with contemporary patterns, materials, and design until each one feels like a "special one piece" worth wearing for years. She called this approach "ORIGINAL STANDARD," and a decade later it remains the brand's compass.

Design DNA: what "ORIGINAL STANDARD" actually means

CLANE's concept language centers on one phrase: "ORIGINAL STANDARD." Start with something familiar — a trench coat, a pair of straight-leg pants, a knit cardigan — then add a deliberate twist in silhouette, texture, or construction until it becomes something you can't find elsewhere. The result should still feel wearable across scenes, but never ordinary.

In practice, this shows up as sculptural volume (balloon sleeves, puff details, exaggerated frills), tactile layering (tulle gathered skirts, sheer bijou tops), and silhouettes that balance femininity with a relaxed, slightly oversized ease. The 2026SS lookbook makes this literal: its theme "HUG" explores how overlapping layers create new forms.

How to spot CLANE

A "standard" base with a deliberate silhouette twist — balloon, puff, frill, or tulle detail. Volume play on familiar forms. Named denim silhouettes under "FIVE FINGERS DENIM." Messaging around long-term wear and "quality beyond the price."

The brand promise

Materials, tailoring, and details that aim for "価格以上のクオリティ" (quality beyond the price). Every piece is conceived as a "特別な一枚" (special one piece) — meant to be worn for years, not seasons.

Five Fingers Denim: Made in Japan, named for hands

CLANE's signature denim line is called FIVE FINGERS DENIM — five silhouettes, each named after a finger: THUMB (親指), SECRET (人差し指), SECOND (中指), RING (薬指), and PINKY (小指). Every pair is made entirely in Japan: materials, sewing, and processing. The name is a tribute to the craftspeople who finish each step by hand.

SECRET, the tapered ankle-length silhouette that debuted in 22SS, uses 13oz denim and intentionally reproduces the twist of vintage selvedge construction. THUMB is a straight-leg cut in 100% cotton with a cow leather label. PINKY, the most affordable entry at ¥22,000, blends cotton, polyester, and polyurethane for a slimmer fit.

Collaborations: CLANE × Suzu Hirose

CLANE's most high-profile collaboration came in 2024 with actress Suzu Hirose (広瀬すず), a long-time fan who had worn the brand for nine years. Themed "Resonance" (共鳴), the six-piece capsule — from a Japanese-made original tweed overcoat to a kid mohair cardigan to a wide denim pant based on the FIVE FINGERS DENIM "SECOND" silhouette — brought CLANE's design language to a wider audience. Pre-orders opened June 7, 2024 on the official online store, with general release in November.

Materials & construction

CLANE's material choices span a wide range — the common thread is intention. The FIVE FINGERS DENIM line sources 100% cotton and 13oz fabrics finished entirely in Japan. Seasonal pieces use polyester-rayon blends (the Volume Flare Skirt), kid mohair and extra merino wool (the Suzu collab knits), and recycled materials where it makes sense: a cotton-waste yarn top uses reclaimed "落ち綿" (cotton waste) spun into what the brand calls "sustainable yarn," and the CLANE × LONDON UNDERCOVER umbrella is made from recycled PET bottle fabric.

Sustainability notes (what CLANE actually claims)
  • Recycled cotton waste yarn used in a specific top — made from reclaimed "落ち綿" (cotton waste), described as "サステナブルな糸." Source
  • Recycled PET fabric for the LONDON UNDERCOVER umbrella collab (¥11,000 tax incl.). Source
  • Denim production mentions "サステナブルな取り組み" (sustainable efforts) in materials and processing, but no brand-wide certifications have been published. Source

Fit & sizing

CLANE uses a numeric sizing system for most structured pieces: sizes 0, 1, and 2 (closest to S, M, L). Some items — particularly accessories and select tops — come in F (FREE / one-size). The Suzu collab T-shirt even offered a men's FREE size alongside women's 1 and 2. The official shopping guide notes that garment measurements may have slight variance ("多少の誤差"), which is standard for the production methods used.

Sizing system

0 / 1 / 2 for pants, dresses, and structured pieces (roughly S/M/L). F (FREE) for accessories and select relaxed-fit items. Always check the measurements table on each product page — CLANE provides detailed garment dimensions in centimeters.

Fit character

Silhouettes tend toward relaxed, feminine volumes. Oversized pieces are a signature, but structured items (denim, tailored jackets) offer more defined shaping. When in doubt, the brand's own styling photos on each product page show the fit on staff.

Price positioning

CLANE sits in the "accessible designer" range for Japanese womenswear — above fast fashion, below luxury houses. The brand positions itself explicitly around "quality beyond the price," with materials and construction details that punch above the ticket. Here's what the current price ladder looks like:
