Origin: Ex-ISSEY MIYAKE MEN designer, 3D knit visionary
Why it matters: Japan's first apparel B Corp — tech-led knitwear with near-zero waste

CFCL stands for Clothing For Contemporary Life, and the name tells you almost everything: this is a Tokyo-based label that treats clothes as practical tools, not runway spectacle. Founded in 2020 by Yusuke Takahashi — formerly the lead designer at ISSEY MIYAKE MEN — the brand builds almost its entire collection using computer programming–aided 3D knitwear, producing garments with virtually no cutting waste. The result is clothing with the rounded elegance of pottery, the stretch to fit a wide range of body shapes, and the practicality to be washed at home and air-dried.

Design DNA: Knit-ware — clothing as pottery

CFCL coined the term "Knit-ware" by borrowing the word ware — objects that contain or hold something (pottery, cutlery, software). Clothing, in Takahashi's framing, is a container for the body. The VOL.1 collection anchored this idea with pottery-inspired rounded shapes, flowing volumes, and seamless construction that emphasizes pure lines.

That philosophy hasn't changed. Every collection since has been built around three stated pillars: sophistication, consciousness, and comfort & easy care. The knitwear is stretchy enough to fit a wide range of body shapes, washable at home, and quick to dry. The brand explicitly positions itself for the full spectrum of daily life — commuting, working, dining out — without requiring dry cleaning or delicate handling.

3D computer knitting

Core construction method since VOL.1. Computer-programmed knit machines produce garments in three dimensions — no cutting required, resulting in "almost no waste."

Pottery silhouette

Rounded shapes, flowing volumes, and seamless darts that create three-dimensional form directly from the knit structure. The signature POTTERY series makes this visible.

Wash at home

"Comfort and easy care" is a stated brand pillar. Core pieces use recycled polyester that's machine-washable and quick-drying — no dry cleaning needed.

B Corp certified

Japan's first apparel brand to achieve B Corp certification (July 2022). Certified materials share at 81.42% as of VOL.8, with a 2030 goal of 100%.

Materials & construction: the tech behind the clothes

Programming-aided knitwear is not a marketing phrase — it's the literal production method. Garments are programmed and knitted in 3D, dispensing with the cutting step entirely. CFCL claims this results in "almost no waste."

Recycled polyester dominates the core range. The POTTERY LONG SLEEVE DRESS, for example, lists "100% Polyester (Recycled Polyester)," made in Japan, machine washable.

WHOLEGARMENT® machines are central to the new CFCL Knitting Factory (Jan 2026): 43 out of 47 machines will be WHOLEGARMENT® systems, enabling seamless garment production at scale.

Certified materials goal: 81.42% of VOL.8 mass production used third-party certified materials. The target is 100% by 2030.

Signature pieces

CFCL's icons are built to last across seasons. The POTTERY series in particular has been called the brand's "signature" and "iconic" line since the debut collection.

POTTERY Series

The founding silhouette. Pottery-inspired rounded volume, seamless construction, recycled polyester, machine washable. The POTTERY LONG SLEEVE DRESS is the anchor piece. From ¥53,900.

MILAN RIB Tailoring

Sophisticated acetate-and-recycled-polyester rib structure. Appears as tailored jackets, chester coats, and hoodie jackets. Slim fit, one-button closure, machine washable. From ¥89,100.

ENCHANT Series

Hand-sewn sequins on 3D-knitted garments — handcraft meets computer precision. Glossy and matte round sequins layered for occasion dressing that still traces back to the knit-ware ethos.

CFCL × ASICS

GEL-LYTE III CM 1.95 collaboration. The brand's footwear entry point — multiple colorways, cm sizing (22.0–31.0). ¥20,900.

Price positioning

CFCL sits in the premium/designer tier — justified by the 3D-knit construction, recycled certified materials, made-in-Japan production, and the practical care proposition (machine wash, quick dry). Distribution through Selfridges, Le Bon Marché, and JUST ONE EYE confirms the positioning.

Fit & sizing

CFCL uses a numeric sizing system — 1, 3, and 5 for most styles, with some pieces offered in F (one size). The brand's knitwear is inherently stretchy and designed to fit "a wide range of body shapes," which makes the sizing relatively forgiving compared to traditional tailored fashion.

Sizing advice
  • Sizes 1 / 3 / 5 correspond roughly to S / M / L. Some styles use F (free / one-size).
  • Each product page on the official store includes a per-item size guide with measurements. Always check the specific product.
  • The knit construction provides natural stretch — the brand explicitly notes this is designed to accommodate diverse body shapes.
  • For the CFCL × ASICS sneaker, sizing is in centimeters (22.0–31.0).

FAQ

What does CFCL stand for?

Clothing For Contemporary Life. The brand frames clothes as functional "tools" for daily living — not fashion for fashion's sake.

Who founded CFCL?

Yusuke Takahashi, who serves as Founder, Creative Director, and CEO. He previously led design at ISSEY MIYAKE MEN after graduating from Bunka Fashion College. CFCL Inc. was established on February 18, 2020 in Tokyo.

What is "Knit-ware"?

CFCL's term for its design concept. "Ware" means an object that contains something — pottery, cutlery, software. CFCL treats clothing as a "container for the body," with the elegance of pottery and the functionality of a tool. All core pieces are made using computer programming–aided 3D knitwear.

Is CFCL sustainable?

CFCL became the first Japanese apparel brand to achieve B Corp certification in July 2022. The 3D knit construction eliminates the cutting step, producing "almost no waste." As of VOL.8, 81.42% of mass-produced materials are third-party certified. The goal is 100% by 2030.

Can I machine wash CFCL clothes?

Yes — "comfort and easy care" is one of the brand's three pillars. Core recycled-polyester pieces (like the POTTERY series) are explicitly machine washable and quick-drying. Always check the care label on individual items, as some special materials (wool, cashmere, silk) may differ.

Where can I buy CFCL outside Japan?

CFCL's official stockist list includes Selfridges (London), Le Bon Marché (Paris), L'Eclaireur (Paris), and JUST ONE EYE (Los Angeles). For US-based buyers, Greybird (Tokyo/SF) ships Japan-exclusive stock to the United States with import duties covered.

Care & longevity

CFCL builds "easy care" into the product itself. The brand's core recycled-polyester pieces are machine washable and quick-drying — a deliberate design choice, not an afterthought. Individual product pages include specific care instructions.

Care essentials
  • Core knits (recycled polyester): Machine wash. Quick dry. No dry cleaning required. This is a stated brand pillar.
  • Special materials: Some collections include cashmere, wool, silk, and lurex. These may require different care — check the product-specific care label.
  • Longevity: The seamless knit construction means no seam stress points and natural stretch recovery. Fewer weak points = longer garment life.
